The escalating conflict in Iran, triggered by recent US-Israeli strikes on 28 February 2026, has sent shockwaves through global energy markets, raising concerns about UK household energy prices. But how will it affect your energy prices and how does it underline the benefits of energy independence?
Whilst the Ofgem price cap offers temporary protection from any short-term price increases, experts predict significant price changes later on in the year. In fact, UK energy suppliers have already adjusted current fixed-rate deals, and the UK benchmark gas prices have leapt by 54% in the days following the start of the conflict.
Homeowners can expect to see changes to their energy costs from the summer onwards; analysts at Cornwall Forecast have predicted a 10% increase in the July price cap, potentially raising the average household energy bills to £1,800.
But if this conflict in the Middle East continues and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz (a vital route for 20% of global oil and gas) persists for more than six weeks, typical annual bills could jump even higher.
Though the UK may not be totally dependent on imports of oil and liquified natural gas (LNG) from the Middle East, if any supplies that are simply passing through the Strait of Hormuz are disrupted, the demand from alternates increase.
Additionally, QatarEnergy has also halted its LNG production following the attacks, forcing all European markets to compete for more expensive alternatives, which could lead to a significant increase in prices here.
This market change will also directly impact UK electricity rates too. Around 40% of the UK’s electricity is generated from gas, but entirety of its price is primarily determined by the cost of gas, under our “marginal pricing” system. This means that spikes in gas prices feed directly into all power costs for households.
